Scouterer Camp – May 10

WOW, what an EXCELLENT weekend the Venturers and the Senior Scouts had at Bungonia State Conservation Park this weekend. We enjoyed some great abseiling and caving with our skill levels being taken to the next level. The pictures speak for themselves. The tent sauna went down very well too!

Thanks goes to Nathan and Matt (Chairman and Vice Chairman) for organising the 1st Caringbah youth members and equipment with the able support of Barra, Rafiki, Tink and Leopard Head :-)

A HUGE thanks goes to Craig Chantler of 2nd Caringbah for organising the whole camp plus all the other activity leaders who gave up their precious time to make this weekend awesome weekend .

Until next year

Scouts Gliding – Dec 09

20 of our Scout members headed down to the Scout Air Activities Centre in Camden to enjoy the world of gliding.

We flew up to 4000feet in the motorised glider and then the engine was cut and the propellor feathered, ready for us to glide back down to Camden airport.  Many of us took the controls ourselves and flew straight and level or did turns on the way back to the airport.

And the end of the day we washed the glider down and pushed the glider back into its little garage ready for next time.

We had a great time and thank Bob the Gliding Wing Operations Manager and his pilots for their ground school coaching and flying us.  Quite a few of our scouts achieved their pioneer or explorer level air activities badges.

At this stage we have 5 scouts and leaders who have said they want to do the A certficate course in 2010 (Dunc, Damo, Nath, Taz and Baggy) so that they can learn to fly the glider and experience that awesome moment when the instructor steps out and leaves us to take off and fly a simple short flight solo in the $250,000 aircraft.  Man it’s going to be a lot better than learning to drive!  If any of Scout or Venturer is interested in joining us then let Baggy know at jason.juretic@gmail.com We plan to do a course in the July 2010 School holidays and again in the Sep/Oct 2010 School holidays.

Scout Medallion – Nathan – Nov 09

It is with extremely great pleasure that we announce the award of the Scout Medallion to Nathan L.

The Scout Medallion is the highest award in the scout section and can be compared to the Queen’s Scout badge for Venturers; simply put, it’s the coolest of cool scout awards , you have to be REALLY good to achieve this one. Such is the significance of this medal, the Regional Commissioner Lindsey Jeff’s travelled 2 hrs from Sydney to Berry just to present this medal to Nathan at the Shakedown closing parade. This is the first time a 1st Caringbah Scout has earned a Medallion since it was introduced in Australia in 2003. We are very certain it will be the first of many! In the coming months, Nathan will be awarded a Scout Medallion certificate by none other than the Governor of NSW!
To earn the Australian Scout Medallion, Nathan had to complete the Adventurer Level Cord, including single handedly organising and leading a 30km hike and camp over 2 nights without any adults in attendance. He also had to complete at least 10 hours of community service, be of good character, have attended a Scout leadership course and finally organise and execute a leadership project, and a report on this. For his Leadership project Nathan lead Scouts, Cubs. Joeys, Leaders and parents to raise $2000 to bring one Vanuatu Scout to the 2010 Jamboree courtesy of 1st Caringbah Scouts through a car wash and a sponsored canoe. We really look forward to meeting the Vanuatu Scout at AJ in only 5 weeks time!
On a personal note, I would like to say how extremely proud I am of Nathan’s achievements in the Scout section, he has developed into a strong leader and is an ambassador for all scouts. The award of best demonstrated leadership skills (from over 1000 scouts) at NSW State Rally 2009 accurately reflects his capabilities too. BRAVO Nath and I look forward to you going on to bigger and better things in Venturers in early 2010. ENJOY.

Scout Shakedown Camp – Nov 09

Over 35 members of 1st Caringbah Scout Troop headed down to Berry to meet their fellow AJ Troop members from around the Port Hacking District.

The photos displayed are only of 1st Caringbah members while we wait for more photos to be sent by other photographers and we will be communicating the use of the photos to other parents from other troops – then we can release heaps more pics showing the excellent fun we had.

We checked all our equipment and got to know the Scouts and leaders that we will spend 12 days with at the Australian Jamboree 2010. What a great troops we have got!

The highlights for many was the jelly wrestling and the horizontal bungee game.

We have a funny feeling that AJ2010 is going to be a fantastic experience with many fond memories to last us a lifetime. See you at AJ in only 6 weeks time!!!!!!!!!!!

Scouts – Abseiling Heathcote Oct 09

On 25th of October 4 scouts participated in a patrol activity planned by Alex. The patrol activity involved abseiling off a cliff in Heathcote and to have completed their Abseiler Proficiency badge. All scouts did very well and they by the end of the morning had completed their badge. Even though it was raining we all had a lot of fun.

Chris B organised a Sponsored Fish to raise funds for Guide Dog Association of NSW. This was part of his Scout Medallion Leadership project.

Over 15 Scouts, cubs and leaders turned out to enjoy the balmy morning next to the Captain Cooks Bridge.

So you know……

The Australian Scout Medallion is the highest award in the Scout Section. It is considered the pinnacle of Scouting at this stage. To earn the Australian Scout Medallion a Scout must:

1. Participate in a Scout Leadership Course at any time after completion of the Pioneer Badge;
2. Demonstrate an active leadership role in Scouting;
3. Achieve the Adventurer Cord
