Boree Regatta Oct 09

WOW, what an excellent Boree Regatta 2009 we had!

We headed to the delightful green lawns of Bonna Point, Kurnell for a weekend of water and land activities FUN with over 400 members from around the South Metropolitan Region.

Photos are available below (remember to enlarge the photo (click on 4 arrows) and then “show info”):

The highlights were deemed to be the rafting, the late curfew (for the scouts) and the opportunity to catch up with old and new scouting friends from around the Region. It was excellent to see so many of our scouts socialising with other groups.

We had a ball and our Scouts, Cubs and Joey’s did us proud with very good participation and doing their best. We broke our own previous record of 7 trophies (in 2007) by taking out 9 of the 18 trophies up for grabs. How amazing is that! And the Joey’s also did us proud with 5 first places. The cubs also starred with 10 first place certificates and the scouts scored 28 first places – a great achievement by all. With the depth of skills we have across all ages, it looks like we should continue gaining some good results in years to come.

The trophies 1st Caringbah gained were:
Cubs Ensign Shield – Boree Land events Aggregate score – Winners
Cubs Boree Regatta Gunnamatta Shield - Raft Construction and Decoration – Winners
Cubs Billie Green Trophy – Knotting Relay – Ronan H – Winner in 41 seconds
Scouts/Guides Kurranulla Shield – Boree Land events Aggregate score – Winners
Scouts Boree Shield – Boree Land events Aggregate score – Winners
Scouts Wanda Shield – Canoe All Ages – Winners
Scouts Burraneer Shield – Kayak All Ages – Winners
Scouts Port Hacking Trophy – Biathlon All Ages – Winners
Scouts Keith Holle Trophy – Knotting Relay – Jessica J – Winner in 28 seconds

This competition has been especially designed to develop the Joey, Cubs and Scouts skills across a whole spectrum of areas including teamwork, knotting, construction, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, fire lighting, cooking, camp craft and lateral thinking. From the trophies listed above, it’s great to see our youth members have these skills in spade loads and we know we still have a lot to learn too!

A HUGE thanks go to so many of our Joey, Cub and Scout leaders and parents who went beyond the call of duty to prepare, set up and pack up the camp and all the equipment needed for this event. There are way to many names (and I am too scared to miss someone out) to mention you all!

Hopefully Croc’s, Dingo’s and Bagheera’s voices will be back to normal ready for Scouts on Thursday!

Scouts Challenge Camp – Sep 09

Well, what an excellent time we had.  We dodged the wombats as we headed out to the Old Ford Campsite in the Blue Mountains on the Friday night.  Then we hiked along the 6 foot track following the Cox’s River,  (seeing an Echidna, a red bellied black snake, 3 brown snakes) until we reached the famous Bowtell’s Bridge where we had a fantastic cool dip before crossing this precarious wire/cable bridge.

We headed passed a HUGE goanna on the way to the beautifully remote Cox’s River Campsite where we pitched our tents before cooking up a storm ready for the night exercises of “capture the flag” and “spot lighting” – great fun.

On the Sunday we hiked further up the 6 foot track whilst Baggy progressively picked us all up and dropped us off with some “ninja 4 wheel driving”.  We cracked through some campcraft badgework before all heading to the Jenolan Caves to enjoy lunch, watch 3 water monitors defend their territory and then enjoy some caving in the “Plug Hole Adventure”.  This was excellent fun and involved us abseiling down into the cave before we then worked our way 110 meters down into the depths of the caves.  Some of those holes were very tight for some of our leaders!

BRAVO to Sonik for organising this camp for his Scout Medallion Leadership project.  We look forward to the next camp.

So you know……

The Australian Scout Medallion is the highest award in the Scout Section. It is considered the pinnacle of Scouting at this stage. To earn the Australian Scout Medallion a Scout must:

1. Participate in a Scout Leadership Course at any time after completion of the Pioneer Badge;
2. Demonstrate an active leadership role in Scouting;
3. Achieve the Adventurer Cord

Scout Group Fair – Aug 09

Joeys going up & Cubs invested Jun 09

At the end of Term 2 2009 we celebrated another Joey going up to cubs
in the traditional 1st Caringbah way – climbing up the rope ladder and
into the waiting hands of cubs who had a party ready for her at the
top.  Yes it was Amy H’s turn to climb the ladder and being the part
monkey she is she made short work of getting to the top and finding
the party and the food.

A good time was had by all.  Joeys when will you be going up??

Also when we returned for the 1st night back at Cubs we performed 2
new investitures – William H (new cub) and Amy H (from Joeys) were
invested and are proud to wear their new cubs shirts and of course
belong to the best scouting group in the world – 1st Caringbah.
Welcome.

Cubs – CHOCOLATE – Aug 09

That was the party theme for the 1st day back in Term 3 2009 and by
the end of the night everyone was over chocolate (that has to be a
first for cubs doesn’t it).

We started the night with a knot tying competition which included
doing a clove hitch with a jelly snake and also a 2 cub one-handed
reef knot. Everyone improved their knots significantly!

Then we had a game of Malteser Athletics where cubs in their six relay
had to blow a malteser across the floor to their team mate until all
the pack had completed. That got rid of some hot air and helped clean
the floor (sorry parents about the dirty clothes).

Chocolate cutting was Wallabies favourite chocolate game where each
six got a family size block of chocolate and on throwing the dice had
to cut (with knife and fork – you see we even teach cubs good table
manners) the squares of chocolate and eat them before a six was rolled
- it then got passed to the next cub.

Now I have to say the desire for chocolate was starting to wane a
little however the 1st Caringbah Cub pack soldiered on – the final
game involved running (to burn some chocolate calories) around the
pack circle before picking up maltesers with chop sticks.

Then….more food – party pies, chocolate fudge, chocolate crackles,
chocolate sprinkles, chocolate biscuits and washed all down with Milo.

Hmmmm I think we cured them all of craving chocolate. A lot of cubs
went to a lot of trouble dressing in their favourite chocolate. Hope
you had a good night.

Special thanks to Wallaby for assisting with the planning and buying
all the food (even though she could not be there), and to Bridget and
Melissa for cooking and cleaning up so well.

Cubs Sutherland to Surf – Jul 09

The 1st Caringbah group attended the Sutherland to Surf event on Sunday the 26 July.

A large contingent of Cubs, along with some Joeys and Scouts assisted the racers by providing them refreshments in the form of a water station where runners and walkers could “drink it or wear it”.

The water was cold but the enthusiasm of the group was excellent.

Thanks Wallaby for organising it.

Community Car Wash – Jun 09

Badger wishes to to thank all those, across all sections,  who participated today, as ‘washers’, having their own car washed, or as food servers.
Nathan, as the scout who  brought the project together and the leaders and a few parents  in particular put in a very great effort for long hours.

Some leaders’ efforts were exceptional and you know who you are.

Both the St Phils  and 1st Caringbah ‘discovered’ each other – to mutual advantage. The event helped make the church ‘Connect 09′ programme a reality and assisted a Vanauatu scout to get to the Jamboree.

BRAVO to all!!

Cubs Grey Wolf Hike – Jun 09

One of our Cub Scouts – Caitlin L relates her Grey Wolf experience below.

On Saturday morning around 7 o’clock Wallaby picked up Ronan and I as well as the rest of the team I picked for my Grey Wolf Walk.  We went in the car to Waterfall where we stopped and put our backpacks on to start the walk.  On the walk were Wallaby, Kaa, Maddie, William, Hayden, Ronan, and myself.  I took the lead with the map and we started down the hill.

The track was a little bit wet but not too bad.  We followed the path climbing down rocks and over fallen logs.  There were markers on the trees and in some places arrows painted on rocks.  We got down to the bottom and then walked across a little creek and got onto the trail to Kingfisher Pools.  The waterfall was running very fast.  We felt the temperature of the water and it was really cold.  We stopped at the table and had a snack before we set off again.  We then walked up a track to the Bubble Caves and on the way found some clay which we grabbed and made sculptures on the way.

We climbed up and around the bubble caves and got some photos and then went down to 1st Caringbah’s camp site at Camp Coutts.  It was region camp weekend and all the scouts were down there and on activities.

I had a lot of fun planning and doing the walk with all the people that came.  The best part is that I had fun with my friends and brought lots of clay to make things with.  The worst part was when William hurt himself at Kingfisher Pools but luckily not too severely hurt.
